Diagnostics of Neutron Star and Black Hole X-ray Binaries with X-ray Shot Widths
A statistic w, the differential coefficient of the mean absolute difference of an observed lightcurve, is proposed for timescale analysis of shot widths. The shortest width of random shots can be measured by the position of the lower cut-off in the timescale spectrum of w. We use the statistic to analyze X-ray lightcurves from a sample of neutron star and black hole binaries and the results sho...
متن کاملCoalescence of Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries
We review the current status of general relativistic studies for the coalescence of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries. First, procedures for a solution of BH-NS binaries in quasi-equilibrium circular orbits and the numerical results, such as quasi-equilibrium sequence and mass-shedding limit, of the high-precision computation, are summarized. Then, the current status of numerical-relativ...
متن کاملBlack Hole and Neutron Star Binaries: Theoretical Challenges
Some of the theoretical challenges posed by the general relativistic description of binary systems of compact objects (neutron stars or black holes) are reviewed. We recall the various ways one can use the theory of the motion, and of the timing, of binary pulsars to test the strong-field and/or radiative aspects of General Relativity. Recent advances in the theory of the motion and radiation o...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation from Mergers of Black Hole–neutron Star Binaries
Angular momentum loss via the emission of gravitational waves must eventually drive compact binaries containing black holes and/or neutron stars to coalesce. The resulting events are primary candidate sources for detectors such as VIRGO and LIGO. We present calculations of gravitational radiation waveforms and luminosities for the coalescence of a black hole-neutron star binary, performed in th...
متن کاملProspects for gravitational-wave observations of neutron-star tidal disruption in neutron-star-black-hole binaries.
For an inspiraling neutron-star-black-hole (NS-BH) binary, we estimate the gravity-wave frequency f(td) at the onset of NS tidal disruption. We model the NS as a tidally distorted, homogeneous, Newtonian ellipsoid on a circular, equatorial geodesic around a Kerr BH. We find that f(td) depends strongly on the NS radius R, and estimate that LIGO-II (ca. 2006-2008) might measure R to 15% precision...
